Organ Works in G Major

This is the newly-recovered wedding recessional that Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847) wrote for her own wedding in 1829. A stately march, it alternates between sections of full chords and imitative sections. Fanny is quickly becoming one of the best known woman composers. This edition also contains an unfinished organ work by her. Recorded on CD by Hester Park CD 7704.

A Brief Bio of the Editor

Calvert Johnson is Professor of Music, College Organist and Chair of the Music Department at Agnes Scott College (Atlanta). He earned his doctorate in organ performance at Northwestern University where he studied with Karel Paukert. His bachelor's degree was earned at Kalamazoo College. Through the Fulbright-Hays program and a French Government Grant, he studied with Xavier Darasse at the Toulouse Conservatoire, where he was awarded the Premier Prix.

An active recitalist, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. Prominent concerts include the Piccolo Spoleto Festival of Charleston, SC; the Eighth International Organ Festival of Morelia, Mexico; Monaco Cathedral, St. Denis Basilica (Paris), the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC) representing the state of Arkansas during the Bicentennial year, and the College Music Society's national meetings in Sante Fe and Savannah. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution has called his playing "thoroughly invigorating" and impressive in "its rhythmic vitality." The Tulsa Tribune has praised his interesting and "highly imaginative" programming. Among his

Johnson's research interests include women composers and early keyboard music. He has recorded for Calcante Recordings and has edited volumes with Vivace Press, ClarNan Editions, and Wayne Leupold Editions. He is past President of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society; he has served as Dean of the Atlanta and Tulsa chapters of the American Guild of Organists; and he chaired the performances committee of the AGO's national convention in 1992.
